Track Record: Pan was signed out of Taiwan as part of the international period that opened on Jan. 15, 2023. At 20 years old, he was quickly put on a more advanced track and caught the attention of scouts during his first spring training. Pan split his first year between both Class A levels, though the bulk of his time came at Low-A Clearwater. He pitched almost exclusively out of the bullpen, save for a four-inning start in early May.
Scouting Report: Pan works with a three-pitch mix fronted by a four-seam fastball that averaged 96 mph and touched triple digits. He backed the fastball with a nasty splitter that the Phillies believe stands as the best change of pace in the system. When combined, the two pitches make for an effective north-south attack. He rounds out his mix with a low-80s slider that flashed above-average. The Phillies worked with Pan all season to help the slider gain more velocity to complete a mix based on power and a variety of shapes. He showed solid control but inconsistent command of his repertoire. He’s shown a slow curveball and a two-seamer in the past, but going forward he’s likely to phase out those two pitches.
The Future: Pan’s role out of the bullpen saw him go multiple innings on all but nine occasions. The organization plans to stretch him out in 2024 in advance of a move into a starter’s workload. If he succeeds, he could fit as a back-end starter, but his likeliest still fit still is as a late-inning reliever.
